Nutrition and Lifestyle Program Topics

Apples and Onions (1-2 hours)

Humans have used food-based approaches to health and healing for millennia. Many of these "folk remedies" have a valid scientific basis. Come learn about the healing properties of apples, onions, vinegar, honey, Maine blueberries, and more!

You Don't Bring Me Donuts Anymore: Make the Switch to Low-Glycemic Living (1-2 hours)

Bookstore shelves are spilling over with diet and nutrition books urging you to kick the carbohydrate habit. But is it safe and wise to limit these foods? Or should you keep eating certain ones? We'll explore some of the popular diet programs and offer some "pearls of wisdom" to go along with your pearls of barley.

Eat to Beat Inflammation (1-2 hours)

The latest research indicates that inflammation is the root of most of the chronic diseases of aging. New research links it to heart disease, dementia, and arthritis, as well as a host of other problems. Anti-inflammatory medications are one option, but many people have found that an anti-inflammatory diet is pleasant, effective, and safer. Is your food plan on fire? Come learn the steps to take to cool it down!

Eating for Athletes (2 hours)

Physically active people have unique nutritional needs and often become perplexed and frustrated by the contradictory recommendations they may get from the media or learn from colleagues. Whether you're an amateur or an elite professional, how do you decide what's right for you? What might you be missing that you don't know about? Can food be a remedy for challenges you may be facing in performance, recovery, or injury prevention? If you have a favorite sports drink, shake/smoothie mix, or snack bar, bring it along. We'll do some label-deciphering!

Chocolate: Health Food, Hype, or Heavenly? (1-2 hours)

What's the story with chocolate? There's more research every day that chocolate, approached mindfully, can actually be rather good for you (or, perhaps, better than some other things you could be eating!) We'll examine the purported health effects and talk about the history of this interesting confection, and of course we'll have some high-quality samples to try!

Time for a Change? (1-2 hours)

Have you been thinking about making a positive lifestyle change but just can't seem to get off the mark? Has your family or your clinician encouraged you to lose weight, stop smoking, change the way you eat, drop an unsightly or dangerous habit, address your personal stress, or move beyond the couch-potato lifestyle, but you're feeling stuck? Successful change is not about self-abuse, and lack of readiness for change is not about "not having any willpower." In this class, we talk about the stages of preparing for change, finding out where you are on your personal change continuum, and learn the success strategies of people who have committed to change and maintained it.

Using Imagination and Creativity for Optimum Wellness (2-3 hours)

Our bodies are hard-wired to know what we need to stay healthy, and will give us guidance about where to start to correct disorders and imbalances when we're sick. Many of us have lost touch with (or never learned) how to access this information. Two simple techniques, guided imagery and non-dominant handwriting, are easy to learn and very useful for "hearing" what your body-spirit wants from you. We'll experiment with both of these (and maybe more) in this fun and empowering presentation. Bring a favorite pen that's easy to write with, and some paper without lines.

It IS the Thought That Counts: The Power of Personalized Affirmations (1-2 hours)

Affirmations are positively-worded statements that help you produce a desired result—sort of like giving the voice in your head a new script. First popularized in health work by Louise Hay, affirmations are used daily by a variety of powerful and accomplished people in all walks of life. We'll discuss how to develop customized affirmations, the characteristics of "great" and "not so hot" affirmative statements, and the science behind this simple and effective body-mind technique.

Please Don't Be Afraid of Fat! (1-2 hours)

Are you one of the people who's been living on the low-fat diet for years, yet you're still overweight, maybe even more than when you started? What is all this stuff you're reading about flax oil and fish oil and trans-fats? Are you spending a fortune on hair, nail, and skin products? Do you have problems like depression, low energy, menstrual cramps, or eczema? All these issues have one thing in common: your body's need for healthy fat (and no, that's not a contradiction in terms!). Join Susan for this fun, fearless look at the most maligned of the nutrients—and learn about why that low-fat diet might just be your worst enemy.

Body Composition and Longevity (1-2 hours)

If you're like many Americans, you are either overweight or "fat on the inside." An improper proportion of fat to non-fat is a common feature of the majority of chronic illnesses most of us want to avoid, and the way to improve yours might not be what you think. If you weigh yourself, measure yourself, and calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI), come learn why you might want to move beyond the scale and learn your body composition (lean/fat ratio) as you track your path to good health and longevity.
